Social Network

Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in schools or in the workplace, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other internet users and develop friendships and business relationships.

Student Joke

Pinkko & Rinkko go on a camping trip, set up their tent and fell asleep.

Some hour later, Rinkko wakes his friend Pinkko "look up the sky and tell me what you see"

Pinkko repiles "I see million of stars"

Rinkko : what does it tell you ?

Pinkko ponders for a moment.

"Astronomically speaking , it tell me that there are millions of galaxies & potentially billions of planets."

"Astrologically , it tells me that Saturn is in Leo."

"Time wise, it appears to be approxiametely a quarter past three."

"Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificiant."

"Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow."

Pinnko: What does it tell you ?

Rinkko is silent for a moment , then speaks.

"Practically.......... Someone has stolen our Tent".

Eats shoots and leaves

A panda walks into a restaurant, sits down and orders a sandwich. He eats the sandwich, pulls out a gun and shoots the waiter dead. As the panda stands up to go, the manager shouts, "Hey! Where are you going? You just shot my waiter and you didn't pay for your sandwich!"

The panda yells back at the manager, "Hey man, I'm a PANDA! Look it up!"

The manager opens his dictionary and sees the following definition for panda: "A tree dwelling marsupial of Asian origin, characterized by distinct black and white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves."

Complex Simplicities

ATOM

The name ATOM applies to a pair of related standards. The Atom Syndication Format is an XML language used for web feeds, while the Atom Publishing Protocol (short AtomPub or APP) is a simple HTTP-based protocol for creating and updating web resources.

The Atom Syndication Format is the next generation of XML-based file formats, designed to allow information--the contents of web pages, for example--to be syndicated between applications.

How April Fools Day Began? April fools day used to be a holiday in some of the European countries and celebrated on April 1st. It is a day where you play pranks on people or simply try to make them fool.

Whats the story behind it:...it is a holiday that started back in the 16th century in France. During that time the accepted calendar was the Julian calendar. The julian calendar was a calandar that ,used April 1st as its new years day, that meant on April 1st every body will have a grand big new years party with gifts.

Now here is where the confusion came: sometime during that century King Charles IX declared that France would begin using the new Gregorian calendar, this calendar had New Year's Day as being January 1st. (this meat that people would not need to celebrate new years day on April 1st). So in France, some of the people still belived that they would be celebrating April 1st as new years day. Those who knew that new year was on january 1st decided to play jokes on the ones that did not. They sent gifts and invited them to bogus parties, & basically made fun at them for celebrating New Year on the wrong day. From then on every April 1st became april fools day.

King cobras eat other snakes : King Cobras eat almost all other snakes with the rat snake being it’s favorite. The King Cobra is peculiar in that it feeds almost exclusively on other snakes, which is reflected in its genus name of Ophiophagus (Snake-eater). The King Cobra is known to attack larger snakes, including Pythons. The King Cobra's diet is mainly composed of other Snakes. When food is scarce though, King Cobras will also feed on other small vertebrates, such as Lizards. After a large meal the snake may live for many months without another meal due to its very slow metabolic rate.

The Aurora : The Aurora are colorful, whispy, moving curtains of light that occur in the night sky near one the Earth's poles. This light moves around in and changes color in a dazzling dance of light. The auroras are caused by energetic particles coming from the Sun. The Sun is very active, always putting stuff out into space. Every once in a while it can suddenly eject material -- a million tons of it -- into space. Some of this comes towards the Earth and hits our atmosphere. The material (small particles) interacts with the Earth's outer atmosphere, causing the gas in the atmosphere to release light. This light appears in many different colors (green, blue, and red), and we call it the aurorae. In the north they are called aurora boreallis, or northern lights. In the south they are called aurora australis, or southern lights.

The  Olympic Flag : The Olympic flag contains five interconnected rings on a white background. The five rings symbolize the five significant continents and are interconnected to symbolize the friendship to be gained from these international competitions. The rings, from left to right, are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. The colors were chosen because at least one of them appeared on the flag of every country in the world. The Olympic flag was first flown during the 1920 Olympic Games.

Meenakshi temple : The Meenakshi temple complex is one of the largest in India. The presiding deity at the Meenakshi temple at Madurai, the Athens of South India, is Goddess Meenakshi. The nucleus of the temple is older than the Madurai city. The splendor of the Meenakshi temple has remained intact for the past so many centuries. The Meenakshi temple complex at Madurai is not only an architectural marvel but also the epitome of Indian culture and civilization.

A Social Network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes. The resulting structures are often very complex.

In its simplest form, a social network is a map of all of the relevant ties between the nodes being studied. The network can also be used to determine the social capital of individual actors. These concepts are often displayed in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties are the lines.

When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share a common interest such as hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Another one of those benefits includes diversity because the internet gives individuals, from all around the world, access to social networking sties. This means that although you are in India, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Oregon or Switzerland. Not only will you make a new friend, but you just might learn a thing or two about a new culture and new languages. And, learning is always a good thing.

As mentioned, social networking often involves grouping specific individuals or organizations together. While there are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular interests, there are others that do not. The websites without a main focus are often referred to as "traditional" social networking websites and usually have open memberships. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to create your own network of friends and eliminate members that do not share common interests or goals.
The dangers often involve online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists with networking out in the real world, too. Just like you're advised when meeting strangers at a bar, school, or work -- you are also advised to proceed with caution online. By being aware of your surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn't feel right.
Social networking relationships are supposed to benefit both parties. Never take more than you give. When the opportunity presents itself, don’t be afraid to ask your contact to introduce you to a prospect. The old saying rings true: it’s not what you know; it’s who you know.
There are many reasons to employ social networking as a marketing tactic. Ensure that you have extra time to spend. While it’s true that the upfront costs are less, this method takes up a lot of time in research and building relationships.
Social Networking Advantages
Refined Search: only social networking sites offer internet users with a search directory that you can use to locate particular individuals or groups. You can search by categories like location, industry, interests and other unique preferences. This way, you do not waste your time and resources establishing connection with people you and your business have nothing in common with.
Affordable visibility: since most of these social networking sites are free, you should maximize them. Make sure that the profile you created will be interesting for the readers. Also, you should make it more personalized by adding interesting articles, images, videos and even reviews of your products.
Receptive Members: the concept of social networking sites lies on the premise that members have at least one thing in common. Because of this, it is not surprising that you will receive messages from people you do not really know or likewise, you could be interested in establishing contact with some of the members who might interest you.
Built-in Group: Starting a discussion is not difficult with social networking sites compared to growing one on your site. With the millions of visitors and members, you will have no problem with attracting participants. Discussion groups are also the best place to do some soft selling. You can accomplish this by lending your expertise on particular subjects.
Expand Network Easily: the key to establishing a successful online business is being visible to other people outside your network. The fact that you are connected to these people because of an existing connection with one of your contacts, make you more trustworthy. Compared to approaching someone on the street, social networking sites would provide you with considerable marketing advantage.
Lower Costs:  It is significantly cheaper to employ online social networking strategies than to pay for advertising. When you social network, you can prescreen potential customers. You learn what your prospects like and what they don’t. That personal relationship you gain when you connect with your potential customer is more valuable than what you would get had you advertised. Advertising is impersonal: the “one size fits all” concept does not seem to work anymore.
Credibility and Trust: Connecting with prospects on a personal level builds trust and credibility. A general rule of thumb is to offer your services, expertise or help before you ask for it. It is acceptable to promote your services when asked. If you’re not careful, your attempts could be considered spam. Instead, wait for the opportunities to present themselves instead of forcing a situation.
It’s Who You Know: When you socialize, you meet others who know others. How are you going to meet the president of a large corporation? You start by talking to his friends. You ask your associates if they know someone who is connected with him and on and on.
1. Business applications
Social networks connect people at low cost; this can be beneficial for entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to expand their contact base. These networks often act as a customer relationship management tool for companies selling products and services. Companies can also use social networks for advertising in the form of banners and text ads. Since businesses operate globally, social networks can make it easier to keep in touch with contacts around the world.
Professional networking sites function as online meeting places for business and industry professionals. Other sites are bringing this model for niche business professional networking.
Virtual communities for business allow individuals to be accessible. People establish their real identity in a verifiable place. These individuals then interact with each other or within groups that share common business interests and goals. They can also post their own user generated content in the form of blogs, pictures, slide shows and videos. Like a social network, the consumer essentially becomes the publisher.
A professional network is used for the business to business marketplace. These networks improve the ability for people to advance professionally. Business professionals can share experiences with others who have a need to learn from similar experiences.
The traditional way to interact is face-to-face. Interactive technology makes it possible for people to network with their peers from anywhere, at anytime in an online environment. Professional network services attract, aggregate and assemble large business-focused audiences by creating informative and interactive meeting places.

2. Medical applications
Social networks are beginning to be adopted by healthcare professionals as a means to manage institutional knowledge, disseminate peer to peer knowledge and to highlight individual physicians and institutions. The advantage of using a dedicated medical social networking site is that all the members are screened against the state licensing board list of practitioners.
The role of social networks is especially of interest to pharmaceutical companies who spend approximately "32 percent of their marketing dollars" attempting to influence the opinion leaders of social networks.

3. Social networks for social good
Several websites are beginning to tap into the power of the social networking model for social good. Such models may be highly successful for connecting otherwise fragmented industries and small organizations without the resources to reach a broader audience with interested and passionate users. Users benefit by interacting with a like minded community and finding a channel for their energy and giving.

4. Investigations

Social network services are increasingly being used in legal and criminal investigations. Information posted on sites such as MySpace and Facebook, has been used by police, probation, and university officials to prosecute users of said sites. In some situations, content posted on MySpace has been used in court.
Facebook is increasingly being used by school administrations and law enforcement agencies as a source of evidence against student users. The site, the number one online destination for college students, allows users to create profile pages with personal details. These pages can be viewed by other registered users from the same school which often include resident assistants and campus police who have signed-up for the service.

The Future of Social Networking

Today, social networking web sites are used by millions of people all over the planet. These networks have the potential to connect people from different demographics who otherwise would never meet.

Social networks use the internet as an amplifier for social interaction. It offers a solution of how to connect people from anywhere in the world and close the gap of separation which is present in real-life society. Rival companies are competing to find the shortest path to an individual, whether they are trying to sell a product, find a date or locate an old friend on a person’s behalf. There are three main difficulties in involved with the current social networking solutions available online to solve problems of this sort. The biggest problem to a site is attracting enough users to the service in order to make it useful, allowing its survival. The minimum number of users a site requires is called its critical mass and must be achieved in order for potential users to deem joining it worthwhile. Once an initial, loyal base of users has been established sites can grow very quickly due to a viral marketing effect with each user getting their friends to join and so on.
The second major problem revolves around the effort a user must exert in order to upload contacts into a variety of different social networking sites. Actively participating in multiple sites consumes more free time than the average user has available for such activities. The final problem is the isolation of each social networking site from its siblings. Most are being developed as standalone systems forcing the user to start from scratch every time they join a new site. However, a few of the latest additions to the collection of social networking sites enable users to import contact lists from their rival sites. This is new method has already been adopted by The Facebook, which revolves around the users having a shared experience of going to the same college or university. By understanding that all these people have a common object, their place of origination, they are better placed to provide a more effective and efficient service to their users.

Conclusions

There is an enormous demand for online social networks which is backed up by the large numbers of visitors to such sites as; YouTube, Bebo, Facebook, del.icio.us, flickr, digg and MySpace. With such a demand existing it is unlikely, that even in the event of a dotcom like disaster hitting the social networks, that they would all disappear. If an event like that was to happen at least some of the bigger networks would likely still exist but they would still have to evolve in order to survive in such competitive market.

Object-centred sociality appears to be a major step forward in the creation and management of contact lists. Having separate categories for; work, friends, family etc, would enable a user to cross-reference the groups, looking for individuals with multiple shared objects. The results of such a query would yield individuals with a greater relevance or association to the user. Unfortunately for users, current social networks have become a competition of who has the most contacts, resulting in users adding individuals who they will never interact with. This attitude must change if sites are to fulfil their potential and enable better connection between users.

Enhancing existing functions and adding new functionality, not just with gimmicks and novelties, is also vitally important in sustaining and even improving on the massive numbers of social network users. Future sites must also address the problem if integration with other software to reduce the workload on the user. In addition, video will likely play an increasingly larger role in online social networks, as broadband becomes more popular and new computers, especially laptops, are coming with built in cameras.

Future developments could include trying to incorporate user meta data such as; marked favourites, joined social groups and contact lists into this facility to not only identify how “interesting” an item is to a user but how likely it will be “interesting” to a specific user. Social networks have reached a crossroads in the journey from a simple text messaging service to a fully integrated, multimedia, knowledge based means of communication. There is more than a little room for excitement when considering the future of social networks, whatever that turns out to be.

Like RSS, Atom places the content and metadata of an internet resource into a machine-parsable format, perfect for displaying, filtering, remixing, and archiving. Atom is an up-and-coming format for editing, syndicating, and archiving weblogs and other episodic web sites.

Web feeds allow software programs to check for updates published on a web site. To provide a web feed, a site owner may use specialized software (such as a content management system) that publishes a list (or "feed") of recent articles or content in a standardized, machine-readable format. The feed can then be downloaded by web sites that syndicate content from the feed, or by feed reader programs that allow Internet users to subscribe to feeds and view their content.

A feed contains entries, which may be headlines, full-text articles, excerpts, summaries, and/or links to content on a web site, along with various metadata.

The Atom format was developed as an alternative to RSS. Ben Trott was one of the advocates of the new format that became Atom. He took note of the incompatibility between some of the versions of the RSS syndication format, and also believed that XML-RPC-based publishing protocols were not sufficiently interoperable.

HTTPS

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer, or HTTP over SSL) is a Web protocol developed by Netscape and built into its browser that encrypts and decrypts user page requests as well as the pages that are returned by the Web server. HTTPS is really just the use of Netscape's Secure Socket Layer (SSL) as a sublayer under its regular HTTP application layering. HTTPS uses port 443 instead of HTTP port 80 in its interactions with the lower layer, TCP/IP.

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer) is a URI scheme used to indicate a secure HTTP connection. It is syntactically identical to the http:// scheme normally used for accessing resources using HTTP. Using an https: URL indicates that HTTP is to be used, but with a different default TCP port (443) and an additional encryption/authentication layer between the HTTP and TCP. This system was designed by Netscape Communications Corporation to provide authentication and encrypted communication and is widely used on the World Wide Web for security-sensitive communication such as payment transactions and corporate logons.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

Secure Sockets Layer is a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data - a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers.

The SSL protocol was originally developed by Netscape, to ensure security of data transported and routed through HTTP, LDAP or POP3 application layers. SSL is designed to make use of TCP as a communication layer to provide a reliable end-to-end secure and authenticated connection between two points over a network (for example between the service client and the server). Notwithstanding this SSL can be used for protection of data in transit in situations related to any network service, it is used mostly in HTTP server and client applications. Today, almost each available HTTP server can support an SSL session, whilst IE or Netscape Navigator browsers are provided with SSL-enabled client software.

SSL is in fact not a single protocol but rather a set of protocols that can additionally be further divided in two layers:

The protocol to ensure data security and integrity: this layer is composed of the SSL Record Protocol.
The protocols that are designed to establish an SSL connection: three protocols are used in this layer: the SSL Handshake Protocol, the SSL ChangeCipher SpecPprotocol and the SSL Alert Protocol.
The main objectives for SSL are:

Authenticating the client and server to each other: the SSL protocol supports the use of standard key cryptographic techniques (public key encryption) to authenticate the communicating parties to each other. Though the most frequent application consists in authenticating the service client on the basis of a certificate, SSL may also use the same methods to authenticate the client.

Ensuring data integrity: during a session, data cannot be either intentionally or unintentionally tampered with.
Securing data privacy: data in transport between the client and the server must be protected from interception and be readable only by the intended recipient. This prerequisite is necessary for both the data associated with the protocol itself (securing traffic during negotiations) and the application data that is sent during the session itself.
